State of the Estate by Christopher Sharits:
As the executor of the estate, I manage my father's posthumous art and film career. I couldn't do it without the dedicated assistance from The Anthology Film Archives NYC, the Greene Naftali Gallery NYC and all of my wonderful film distributors around the world . During his relatively short life, he experienced an envious level of international recognition and fame that both created ecstasy and pain. Driven by the demons of bipolar disorder and self-medication, he vividly expressed his anxiety and frustration both on the canvas and on the screen. His work can be seen and/or viewed at prominent museums, galleries, art centers, and virtually any university with a media studies program. To see a partial list from his lifetime, go to our Biography/Filmography page. http://paulsharits.com/bio.htm
His posthumous career continues to expand at an unbelievable rate. In the past year, we had an internationally acclaimed Spring 2009 Paul Sharits art exhibition and four projector installation “Shutter Interface” at the Greene Naftali Gallery in NYC with the cooperative efforts by The Anthology Film Archives NYC and the Paul Sharits Estate that was nominated for “Solo Show of the Year, Gallery” at The First Annual Art Awards at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum NYC on October 29, 2009. We were one of four nominations that included Cindy Sherman, Metro Pictures, NYC; Manzoni: A Retrospective, Gagosian Gallery, NYC (winner); and Picasso: Mosqueteros, Gagosian Gallery, NYC. Just a few weeks later, on November 13 th , we had two movies, “Sears Catalogue” and “Word Movie,” screened at the Louvre Paris during a lecture series by renowned Italian philosopher and writer Umberto Eco. Our permanent exhibition of “Declarative Mode” was continued at the Centre Pompiduo Paris. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) NYC is concluding their acquisition of the drawing and operative notes for “Shutter Interface.” Globally, we had over 100 film screenings. The icing on the cake of an unprecedented year is the acquisition of the four projector 16mm film loop installation “Shutter Interface” by the Smithsonian's museum of contemporary art, The Hirshhorn, for permanent exhibit in Washington, D.C. The date for the Hirshhorn's opening celebration for 2010 has yet to be announced, but we will be there!
